As programming co-chair of the Wine Media Guild so grateful to Ana Fabiano, Vibrant Rioja, and Wines from Spain for making our tasting of Rioja wines such a success! Our speaker was Ana Fabiano, currently U.S. Trade Director of Vibrant Rioja and author of “The Wine Region of Rioja.”
Ana was one of the three founders of Wines from Spain and has led many tours through Rioja and other regions of Spain. In 2007, she earned a Mastery Certification in the Castilian language from The Cervantes Institute, a credential that allowed her to research and write her book.
During the tasting we delved into the different wine regions of Rioja — Rioja Alavesa, Rioja Alta and Rioja Baja — and their different styles of wine including Izaldi 2011, Luis Alegre Rosado 2011, Ramírez de la Piscina Crianza 2008, Muriel Reserva 2005 and Dinastía Vivanco Reserva 2005 and older vintages poured with the meal.
Aside from the great wine and the opportunity to experience the different flavors, what I liked best was the way guild members could compare the wines and also map them to the points Ana made as she spoke, including the “modern” and “traditional” styles and the great value that Rioja presents today, especially considering the long aging styles of many of the red wines.
